How to Connect WordPress Forms to Mailchimp
Asking someone to fill out a contact form and then separately sign up for your newsletter is one extra step too many — most people won’t do both. The fix is connecting your form directly to Mailchimp, so a single submission both reaches you and adds the visitor to your list. Contactum includes this integration in its free plugin.
Step 1: Get Your Mailchimp API Key
Log in to Mailchimp, click your account avatar in the bottom-left corner and go to Profile, then the Extras tab and API keys. Click Create A Key, give it a label like “Contactum,” and copy the generated key. It’ll look something like xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-us1 — keep the -us1 suffix intact, Contactum uses it to find the right Mailchimp server automatically.
Step 2: Connect Mailchimp in Contactum
Go to Contactum → Settings → Integrations → Mailchimp, paste the key into the API Key field, and click Save Settings. Contactum verifies the key against your account immediately — you’ll see a green “verified” badge if it worked, or Mailchimp’s own error message if something’s wrong with the key.
Step 3: Enable Mailchimp on a Specific Form
The global connection doesn’t subscribe anyone by itself — open the form you want connected, go to Form Settings → Integrations, and toggle Mailchimp on. Click Configure to set up field mapping.
Step 4: Map Your Fields
In the Configure dialog, choose which Mailchimp List (audience) to subscribe people to — click the refresh icon to load your audiences — then map Email (required) and, optionally, First Name and Last Name to the matching fields on your form using the smart tag picker. Turn on Double Opt-In here too if you want Mailchimp to send its own confirmation email before activating the subscription.
Step 5: Save and Test
Save the dialog, then save the form. Submit a test entry with a real email address on the live page, and check Mailchimp → Audience → All contacts a moment later — the new subscriber should appear there. Subscription happens after the entry is saved, so a temporary Mailchimp API issue never blocks the visitor’s submission; they still see a normal success message either way.
What Happens With Repeat Submissions
If the same email submits again, Mailchimp updates their name fields rather than creating a duplicate contact. If someone previously unsubscribed from that list, Mailchimp’s API won’t re-subscribe them automatically — that’s a deliberate anti-spam rule on Mailchimp’s side, not something the integration can override.
Beyond Mailchimp
If you use a different email marketing platform, Contactum Pro extends the same pattern to around a dozen others — ActiveCampaign, GetResponse, ConvertKit, AWeber, Drip, Sendinblue/Brevo, Campaign Monitor, MailerLite, Moosend, SendFox, Constant Contact, and iContact — each connected and mapped the same way: global API key, per-form enable, field mapping.
